Knowledge is often nonlinear and complex ~ inappropriate for simple hierarchical organization.
Instructional methodology used to present simple and well structured information is unsuitable for more advanced learning in “ill structured” domains.
- Research shows improper use actually hinders the assimilation and transfer of complex knowledge by operation of “reductive bias”
Flexible learning environments are required which permit same items of knowledge be presented and learned in a variety of different ways.
At the advanced level there are no clear-cut right or wrong answers and understanding of the domain requires simultaneous understanding of often conflicting viewpoints!
