• Universal Serial Cable

• Breakout Box

• RS-232 Mini-Tester

• Multimeter

• D-Sub Pin Crimper

• Micro Soldering Iron

• Wire Tools

Modular to D-Sub Adapters

• They take DS-25 or DS-9 and convert it to 8-position or 6-position modular jacks for patch cords.

• You wire the heads ONCE, and use an appropriate length patch cable between them.

• If you move something and need the cable to be longer, you just substitute another straight-through patch cable. No rewiring the cable.

• The modular adapter is sturdier than a lot of regular D-Sub heads.

• Use Cat-5 UTP for longer runs. We have gotten up to 1000 feet at 9600 baud.

Troubleshooting the RS-232 Interface

1. Be logical

2. Know your entire cable plant

3. Isolate the variable

4. Use testers

5. Swap in known good equipment and/or cables

6. Be careful of double-faults
