What is RS-232 and Why Should I Care?

It is a standard that defines the interface between Data Terminal Equipment (DTE), such as a dumb terminal, and Data Communications Equipment (DCE also given as Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment in the EIA/TIA Standards), such as a modem.

It has been used and abused for much, much more, confusing everyone involved.
